Members of the group “Women and Men of Zimbabwe Arise” (WOZA and MOZA) marked November 29, 2010, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day with a peaceful march in central Bulawayo to the offices of the state-owned Chronical news offices. The reason they marched was to ensure that their voices will be heard in consultation around the implementation of a new constitution, one in which women’s voices are taken into account. The draft of their report, entitled”The Rising of Women means the Rising of the Nation–No More Poverty and Starvation, Many Sweating for a Few to Benefit,” can be read here.
Moreover, as this peaceful march is a part of the UN’s call for 16 Days of Activism to end violence against women, a press statement from WOZA addresses the inadequacy of a few days of the year for activism to end violence against women, stating:
“Whilst recognising the importance of the 16 Days of Activism, WOZA would like to insist that 365 days of the year be considered days of activism against gender violence. At no time, is violence against any individual acceptable.”
We need 365 days for nonviolence.
