GandhiArtARThe Metta Center for Nonviolence has been at home in Petaluma for a couple years now spreading the word about the great force called nonviolence (satyagraha). This year, in celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth and the International Day of Nonviolence, we are excitedly launching a new tradition. Metta Center and the Petaluma Community will host a week of events, free and open to the public. The goal of these events are to

  • Raise awareness about the rich potential of Gandhi’s great discovery, nonviolence, for individuals and communities.
  • Create a deeper sense of community by bringing together members from varied backgrounds.
  • Share tools that can be used to address specific community problems.

YOU CAN FIND OUR SCHEDULE OF EVENTS HERE!

If you or your group would like to be a part of this and host and event of your own, please email soneile@mettacenter.org.

We support local teachers to get involved and involve their students in this celebration of nonviolence! Some ways that teachers can take advantage of this great educational and community building opportunity is through:

  1. Teaching nonviolence the week leading up to and during the events. An excellent, searchable database of lesson plans and projects can be found at http://www.csupomona.edu/~ahimsacenter/k12/ and more resources at /research-education/
  2. Schedule a classroom visit from Metta Center for Nonviolence before or during this week. Contact Stephanie at stephanie@mettacenter.org or 707-774-6299 to set this up.
  3. Give students homework assignments that encourage them to participate in the week of nonviolence.
  4. Art and other projects relating to nonviolence and/or Gandhi, e.g. creating a peace quilt or a set of cards highlighting nonviolence principles and nonviolence heroes (Metta would like to print a deck, maybe your class can help?); one or more instructional games.
