Peace Profiles: Sojourner Truth

Nonviolence is an integral part of American history, and not only because of Martin Luther King, Jr.! Peaceful activists were quite common in early America and in the rest of the world.  Our Peace Profiles series focuses on one well known figure in History or current events who were/are deeply committed to pacifism, nonviolence, and peace.  These are readings, appropriate for high school classes, on figures that can easily be woven into a high school US or World history or English Literature class- but highlight the nonviolent work each person embodied.

To start our series off, consider Sojourner Truth.  Not only was she a lifelong activist for peace and nonviolence, she may not even have said the words “ain’t I a woman.”  This fascinating woman deserves much more recognition than she currently receives:
