With characteristic humility, Gandhi says that he “seems” to himself to be constantly growing. He was, of course. Because his firm grasp on the unvarying principle of nonviolence allowed him to respond to others and changing circumstances without ever losing it. He was not a “one tactic” movement! Now spread this beautiful image out in social space instead of time, and you get the priceless discovery of “heart unity:” that we can find our unity of purpose with others within and not be separated by the innumerable differences on the surface, i.e. without. How much needless conflict that would save!
