We are designing a seminar on a topic that has been in my mind ever since I wrote my first book on nonviolence (1982!): science and nonviolence.
As the late Willis Harman said,
“Science is the knowledge-validating system of our civilization,”
and that remains true even though faith in science – and civilization! – has been steadily eroded in modern culture.
This seminar, an introduction for those not familiar with principled nonviolence and a master class for those who are, will be built on two themes: in what sense is nonviolence itself a science, as Gandhi insisted it was throughout his career, and how do the incredible discoveries of ‘new science,’ beginning with the quantum breakthroughs of the last century, help us to understand and communicate to others the nature of nonviolence and its startling effectiveness.
We welcome your input as we continue to develop an inspiring and highly useful offering from these ideas.
Michael,
I’ve always been drawn to this aspect of nonviolence, and to Gandhi’s quote on science, because it just seems to follow a logic, for one, and it can also be studied. Conclusions can be drawn based on evidence. It’s not metaphysical; it’s practical.
So yes, go for it!
You probably have done this already, but you should definitely get social psychologist, experimental psychologists, and other experts on attitude change and persuasion involved in the discussion. There has to be a lot of data on this already.
I remember how my at first initial negative attitude about gays changed immensely when I had a Departmental chairperson in Germanic Languages who was gay and who treated me with the utmost fairness. I even joked “Better a gay American as Chair than a straight German.”
I and my wife have long been friends with a fundamentalist Christian couple and what worked there was to not enter into religious conversations with the aim of disputing the other person’s deeply held beliefs.
Hello, Michael~ This course sounds exactly like what’s most needed now~ways(s) of looking at & incorporating Nonviolence into each & every aspect of our lives, so that as our consciousness develops greater, higher awareness, it will be possible to Prevent violence to ourselves/others, as well as contribute a great deal of positive, loving energy to the whole of life. Are you looking at the ‘energy side of things’ in this course, seeing nonviolence as an form of love in action? To me, nonviolence is as essential as compassion & forgiveness; in fact. they represent the ‘how’ such is attained, w/nv as a ‘what.’
All the best~
